How to Purify by Recrystallization

We show how to purify aluminum nitrate and strontium nitrate by recrystallization. This is important because those two substances must be extremely pure for our upcoming video on making glow in the dark powder. First make aluminum nitrate from our previous video: http:www.youtube.comwatch?v=u4Ha1SJrazY Dissolve the dry aluminum nitrate in water and filter off any insoluble materials. We could not filter it off before it dried in the previous video because the particles at that stage are much too small. It needs crystallize once to aggregate into particles large that can be filtered. After filtering, dry off the aluminum nitrate. The desiccator bag might be useful here: http:www.youtube.comwatch?v=XJFfS_YbbYI After drying, carefully weigh out the crystals. Then take that mass and add in 20% mass of water. So if you have 50g like me, you add 10g of water (or 10mL since density is 1gmL). It won't all dissolve, so carefully heat the mixture until it dissolves. Then cover it and let it cool down. Eventually it'll crystallize out purer crystals. After the mixture cools to room temperature, and left for a few hours. The liquid is poured off and discarded, it has the impurities and is not needed. The crystals are again weighed and once again they are recrystallized with 20% water. Once this is done. Dry the final product. I started with 50g and ended up with 17g. But now it's very pure. Better than 99% Strontium nitrate also needs to be purified. But it's solubility doesn't change that much with temperature so we'll have to purify by slow evaporation recrystallization rather than thermal cycle recrystallization. First, make strontium nitrate like our previous video: http:www.youtube.comwatch?v=_rd8b6wNnKA Once again, dissolve it in water and filter it. Then let it crystallize. But before it dries completely, let the liquid reduce to about 20% of it's saturated volume. So I started with a saturated solution of 10mL of strontium nitrate, i then waited until it evaporated down to 2mL of fluid. The crystals are not included in this assessment. Then discard the liquid. Repeat the recrystallization process. Once again, use the desiccator bag to obtain extremely dry chemicals. We are now ready to produce glow-in-the-dark powder.

How to Make Ammonium Nitrate

In this video we make ammonium nitrate from various off-the-shelf chemicals. Note: This is not cheaper than buying it directly, once again our objective is to explore the chemistry. Warning: The chemicals are corrosive and ammonia has a horrible smell, work outside or in a fumehood and wear gloves. First get 138 grams of sodium bisulfate and add just enough water to dissolve it, usually 300mL. Then get one mole equivalent of a pure nitrate salt. Some common salts include: Sodium nitrate: 85 grams. Potassium nitrate: 101 grams. Calcium nitrate: 118 grams (if using tetrahydrate) Dissolve the nitrate in a minimum of water, then mix the two solutions together. Neutralize the mixture with ammonia (using a pH meter to determine the endpoint). Filter the mixture to get rid of any insoluble materials if needed, then boil until sodium sulfate begins to precipitate. Then cool the mixture to 0 Celsius and filter. Dry the filtrate to obtain ammonium nitrate mixed with some leftover metal sulfates. For higher purity the solids can be mixed with 500mL of methanol which selectively dissolves ammonium nitrate. Filter again and evaporate the filtrate to obtain pure ammonium nitrate.

Tulsa police arrest a woman for mixing chemicals to make meth inside a south Tulsa Walmart on Thursday. Elizabeth Alisha Greta Halfmoon, 45, also known to go by Alisha Halfmoon, was arrested for endeavoring to manufacture meth at the 81st and Lewis store. Police say surveillance video shows Halfmoon had been in the store since noon. Six hours later security noticed she was acting suspicious, so they called Tulsa police. Responding officers say she claimed she was "too broke to buy the chemicals." "She didn't have the money to make the purchases of the chemicals that were needed so she was taking what was needed in the bottle," says Officer David Shelby. Shoppers inside the store had no idea someone was cooking meth. "This is a family store," says Jessica Fuentes, who also had her 1-year-old son inside the store. "People need to start thinking. If she has family she needs to think about her family. If you are broke. It's just wrong." "When I saw her she had just finished mixing sulfuric acid with starter fluid in a bottle," says Officer Shelby. They immediately got her, and the ingredients, out of the store before any of the shoppers got hurt. No one was evacuated. "Something could have happened, something could have blown up in there," says shopper Jonathan Tary. "When firefighters were on the scene she made statements to them that is what she was doing, she was attempting to obtain these chemicals and was in the process of trying to manufacture meth. However, she said she was not very good at it," says Shelby. A responding officer didn't know the bottle was active. As he was discarding the bottle the chemicals burned through the bottle and through his gloves. He was treated for chemical burns on his hands and is okay. Police say they arrested Halfmoon just last month in a smurf sting. Smurfs are known among police as meth cooks or recruits who purchase pseudoephedrine to make meth. The medication is often found in cold and allergy medicines and is the main ingredient needed to make meth. Jail records show she was booked on November 6 and released from jail on those charges on December 6. Records show she received a deferred sentence and bonded out on $7,500. In this case her bond has been set at $100,000 and her arraignment is set for December 16th. In October, Glenn Reese was arrested at that same Walmart with a backpack containing what police called an active meth lab. Drainage ditches and tunnels in that area have been a common place for meth making and using, according to Tulsa police.
